Fuerteventura owes its elongated shape and the richness of its geography to the eruptions and lava generated by them, more than 50,000 years ago. At that moment, the island was born.

At 278 meters of altitude and with a crater 70 meters deep, a walk on its summit offers magnificent views and the possibility to get even closer to the particular landscape that surrounds it.
It is impossible to make a trip to Fuerteventura and miss the ascent to this astounding place. That is why we invite you to join us in this adventure, which will be not only easy, but also incredibly enriching and unforgettable. Get ready for this spectacular journey!
In order to start this incredible tour, we must begin from the base of the volcano, in the village of Lajares. For the ones who come from the north of the island: you will find the start of the route before entering the village and passing the soccer field at the “Camino de las Calderas”.
A space to park the car and direct visitors to the path that allows you to start the ascent is nearby.
The routes are perfectly marked. First, you will have to take a local trail, known as the SL- FV2, that leads through a route of almost 5 kilometers (approximately one hour) to the volcano’s cone.
There is a second trail longer than the previous one. This one is the GR-131 route, which is 25 kilometers long and starts in the central area of Corralejo, passing by the Bayuyo and Calderón Hondo volcanoes. This continues to the Malpaís de la Arena Monument, until it reaches the town of La Oliva.
Taking the first route marked, the FV2, you can begin the ascent along a path well signposted by the stones of volcanic origin. Bordering the slope of the volcano, first crosses a flat road, which leads to Montaña Colorada.
There, you can see the cracks and holes caused by the work formerly done in the quarries. Nowadays, it is a banned activity, according to reasons of environmental conservation.
Following this route, there is a little slope. It is easy to pass through, even for those without much physical preparation. Already from this point we can see the sea in the distance, next to the rocky landscape. It will seem that you have been transported to a magical place.
Throughout the tour, you will be accompanied by the typical squirrels of the area, a species that is not native to the archipelago and managed to adapt very well to the geography and climate of the place. They will give you very funny scenes to photograph.
Continuing along the route, and after passing the crossroads of the GR-131, take the path to the left that will take you straight to the volcano cone.
When you reach the cone, you will find a railing, and the viewpoint area where there are binoculars that allow you to see the entire perimeter of the island. There you can even see Lanzarote and Lobos Island!
Climbing the Calderón Hondo volcano of Fuerteventura is a very interesting hiking experience, as the geography of the place is really spectacular. Precisely because of the conditions of the terrain and the island’s own climate, we recommend you to take into account certain aspects before you begin to ascend to the volcano.
To make the route comfortable and pleasant, from Lopesan we recommend you to take with you:
An important aspect to keep in mind when hiking is to always stay hydrated. During the route, you will not find any kind of water source, so we recommend you to have a good supply of liquids in your backpack.
On the other hand, sunscreen is essential, especially if you go for the tour in the hottest hours of the day.
Also, you can bring a hat and sunglasses. This way, it will be a really pleasant experience where you will only need to worry about capturing those breathtaking views with your camera or cell phone without getting sunburned the next day.
As we have already mentioned, the trail is rocky, so wearing shoes that allow you to have a good grip, that are comfortable and provide a good support will make the journey much more bearable.
There are some basic recommendations that we must keep in mind as long as we stay in the area and when we decide to make the route as, for example:
As a preventive measure, try not to leave your purse or valuables in the car, especially when you are going to leave the vehicle parked for long excursions and away from it.
This is a recommendation that comes in handy if you want to avoid the hours of the strongest sun. It will be perfect if you are looking to avoid encountering with other hikers. In addition, the sunsets from the top are truly magical and will give you the chills.
If you have children, try to do this route just before sunset or very early in the morning, when the sun is barely warm. Go slowly and try to take the widest and least steep paths. This way, the whole family will enjoy the tour, and it will be an unforgettable experience.
