The base of Calderón Hondo in Fuerteventura: ascent routes

In order to start this incredible tour, we must begin from the base of the volcano, in the village of Lajares. For the ones who come from the north of the island: you will find the start of the route before entering the village and passing the soccer field at the “Camino de las Calderas”.

A space to park the car and direct visitors to the path that allows you to start the ascent is nearby.

The routes are perfectly marked. First, you will have to take a local trail, known as the SL- FV2, that leads through a route of almost 5 kilometers (approximately one hour) to the volcano’s cone.

There is a second trail longer than the previous one. This one is the GR-131 route, which is 25 kilometers long and starts in the central area of Corralejo, passing by the Bayuyo and Calderón Hondo volcanoes. This continues to the Malpaís de la Arena Monument, until it reaches the town of La Oliva.

The climb to the crater of the volcano Calderón Hondo of Fuerteventura

Taking the first route marked, the FV2, you can begin the ascent along a path well signposted by the stones of volcanic origin. Bordering the slope of the volcano, first crosses a flat road, which leads to Montaña Colorada.

There, you can see the cracks and holes caused by the work formerly done in the quarries. Nowadays, it is a banned activity, according to reasons of environmental conservation.

Following this route, there is a little slope. It is easy to pass through, even for those without much physical preparation. Already from this point we can see the sea in the distance, next to the rocky landscape. It will seem that you have been transported to a magical place.

Throughout the tour, you will be accompanied by the typical squirrels of the area, a species that is not native to the archipelago and managed to adapt very well to the geography and climate of the place. They will give you very funny scenes to photograph.

Continuing along the route, and after passing the crossroads of the GR-131, take the path to the left that will take you straight to the volcano cone.

When you reach the cone, you will find a railing, and the viewpoint area where there are binoculars that allow you to see the entire perimeter of the island. There you can even see Lanzarote and Lobos Island!
