Fuerteventura is one of the largest islands in the Canary Islands, with amazing natural landscapes and places to visit. But if you have doubts when it comes to choosing the best type of transport, here are some tips on how to get to Fuerteventura and what benefits each alternative offers.

In this article we are going to help you choose the best way to get to Fuerteventura with your family, partner, friends or if you are travelling privately, depending on your needs.

Different ways to go to Fuerteventura

How to get to Fuerteventura, declared a biosphere reserve by Unesco, will depend on where you are coming from. This island is well communicated, as it has several means of transport to get there.

How to get to Fuerteventura by plane?

There are direct flights from some mainland cities, such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao or Santiago de Compostela. If there are no direct flights to your nearest airport, but there are direct flights to other Canary Islands, such as Gran Canaria, Tenerife, or Lanzarote, you can easily catch another flight from these islands to Fuerteventura.

Fuerteventura also has direct flight connections with foreign countries. For example, there are direct flights from countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Norway, England, Holland, Italy and Sweden.

If you are travelling from another of the Canary Islands or have a connecting flight, there are several airlines operating between the islands. These companies offer a high frequency of flights to any part of the archipelago.

How to get to Fuerteventura by boat?

If you’re travelling between the islands, taking a ferry won’t take long and can be a very attractive option if you have a car (check the agency’s policies if it’s a hire car) and don’t want any hassle with luggage. Islands such as Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote are connected to Fuerteventura.

You can also reach the Canary Islands by ferry from mainland cities such as Cadiz or Huelva.

There are two companies, Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas, which operate ferries to and from Fuerteventura. We recommend that you compare timetables and prices of both companies.

The two companies have the same ports between which they operate. The choice of company will depend on the time of day you travel. In addition, prices vary depending on the timetable and whether or not you are travelling with a vehicle. So, we recommend that you compare timetables and prices of the companies currently operating ferries to Fuerteventura.

Plane or boat?

The decision is not only about luggage, whether you travel with a car or not, or the price. You should also consider the location. If you arrive in Fuerteventura by plane, the airport is close to the capital, Puerto del Rosario, in the east of the island. In the capital you will find many shops that can be useful before you reach your accommodations, especially if you are travelling to the southern part of the island, where our hotels IFA Altamarena and Villas Altamarena are located.

On the other hand, depending on where your ferry departs from, it will arrive at a different port. Ferries from Lanzarote arrive in Corralejo, in the north of the island. It’s a convenient location if you’re staying in the north or centre of the island, but bear in mind that it’s almost a two-hour drive from there to Morro Jable in the south.

On the other hand, there are ferries arriving at the Morro Jable port, in the south of the island, very close to our hotels, fabulous beaches and windsurfing possibility. Choosing your ferry is very easy, just check the websites of the two companies mentioned above. You can buy your ticket online or at the ticket office when you arrive at the port. However, be aware that in high season tickets can sell out if you wait until the last minute.

How to get around Fuerteventura?

Have you been interested in the various charms of Fuerteventura that we talked about at the beginning of our article? Then the best thing to do is to hire a car. The places of interest are connected by roads suitable for normal vehicles and you will discover other little gems of the island that often go unnoticed in the tourist pages.

Imagine how many amazing landscapes, cheese dairies, craft shops… you can find on this island. They will give your trip a special charm. There are many places on the island that have not yet been discovered by mass tourism. Please note that if you want to discover some of the charming beaches in the west, such as Cofete, you will have to drive along stony roads which are more suitable for a 4×4 vehicle. However, you can also get there with a normal car if you drive carefully and patiently.

We are fortunate that our hotels in Morro Jable are close to this location, but the road is winding and not suitable for high speed driving. You can hire a car from our hotels, so you can postpone the decision until you arrive!

There are urban guaguas (buses in major cities) and intercity buses. However, they don’t run very often, which means you’ll lose travel time and have less flexibility in schedules. You can combine them with taxis to get to places faster. So, if you plan to travel this way, make sure you have the taxi telephone numbers in Fuerteventura at hand.

Another good idea for sightseeing without having to rent a car is to take a guided tour. But first think about your interests, do the tours go to the places on the island that you really want to visit?

It may even be an option to plan guided tours that include transport or departures close to the hotel and rent a car only for the days you need it. This will make your trip more economical and give you a few days to relax without having to drive.

Now that you know how to get to Fuerteventura if you need accommodations during your stay on the island, at the Lopesan Hotel Group we have hotels located in the sunny south of Fuerteventura. The holiday of your dreams is waiting for you!
