Each of these places has its own particular charm, so they become a great alternative to discover the best traditions of the island and spend unforgettable moments visiting very interesting places that you will love.
The island of Gran Canaria is famous for its paradisiacal beaches and majestic natural landscapes, known for being natural heritage and UNESCO protected areas, but the versatility of the island does not end there.
There are towns that keep in their interior the most traditional constructions of the island, with cobbled streets full of history. Would you like to know these places?
We begin this list of towns to see in Gran Canaria with a site that in 1910 amazed one of the most important writers in Spain: Miguel de Unamuno. He was so amazed that he wrote some letters about this charming town, and for that reason, one of its viewpoints receives his name and has a statue in his honor.
Artenara is located to the northwest, between Tejeda, Agaete and La Aldea de San Nicolás. It stands out for having cave houses, the Risco Caído archaeological site and, of course, several viewpoints where you can enjoy the most spectacular views.
Just 3 kilometers away from the majestic Barranco de Guayadeque is the small town of Agüimes, which seems out of a movie for its picturesque houses and streets full of pastel colors that are characteristic of the traditional Canarian architecture. In fact, the Lopesan Villa del Conde Resort & Thalasso hotel is inspired by the church and the historic center of this beautiful town.
If you are looking for a quiet place to walk and experience a different day, Agüimes can become a great option in which you can disconnect during your well-deserved vacation.
Among the towns that you must see in Gran Canaria we should mention the well-known town of Agaete, located in front of the sea.
This charming fishing village full of white houses has one of the most spectacular historical centers on the island. We recommend you to visit its promenade and taste the fresh fish, a specialty of the restaurants that you will find here.
In the municipality of Agaete you will also find one of the most important archaeological sites in all Gran Canaria: the Maipés necropolis where there are more than 700 tombs solidified by lava. Do you dare to visit it?
Near the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, about 12 km away, is the historic town of Arucas. The architectural and artistic monuments are the main emblem of this town.
The great Church of San Juan Bautista, the Plaza de San Juan and the Casa de la Cultura are some of the places we recommend visiting.
Another charming port area that you need to visit is Puerto de Mogán, located in the municipality that bears its name.
Tourists gave it the name “Little Venice” due to its small canals that run through the entire urbanization that surrounds the port.
In addition to the undoubted beauty of its pier, inside the streets of Puerto de Mogán you can find a path of bougainvilleas and other colorful flowers that will accompany you almost all the way. You should not miss it!
This town in Gran Canaria hides one of the island’s most valuable treasures: the archaeological site of Cueva Pintada. A museum where cave paintings, utensils and constructions of the ancient Canarian aborigines are displayed.
Similarly, if you want to complement your visit, you should not miss visiting the Antonio Padrón Museum House and then end the day by going shopping at La Recova, the municipal market.
Undoubtedly, one of the towns to see in Gran Canaria due to the uniqueness of its historic center is the town of Firgas.
As soon as you arrive at the town of Firgas, you will be greeted by a fountain located on the Avenida de Gran Canaria, where 21 representative heraldic coat of arms of the island’s municipalities are located.
One of the towns you need to see in Gran Canaria is Tejeda. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful towns not only on the island, but in Spain.
In Tejeda, the white houses contrast with the wonderful views of the Roque Nublo and the Barranco Grande. We also recommend you enjoy its gastronomy, especially almond sweets and bienmesabe, a sweet paste made from this fruit.
Following the route to the south of the island you will find a small town full of fruit trees. The tiny town of Veneguera keeps a treasure deep in its streets: a set of low houses, traditional on the island, dating from the 18th Century.
These low houses were built with stones and have wooden balconies. This picturesque town is very close to Mogán and the beautiful natural monument of Fuente de los Azulejos.
Closing this list of towns to see in Gran Canaria we have the town of Teror, which is located in the center of the island. Its main tourist attraction is the impressive Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Pino, patron saint of the island.
Teror is one of the most beautiful places to see in Gran Canaria, due to its traditional architecture that you can appreciate in each of its streets. When visiting this town you will see low houses of various colors with beautiful wooden balconies, which will leave you amazed.
You already know some of the towns that you cannot miss in Gran Canaria on your next vacation. If you are thinking of visiting any of these charming places, you need a place to stay during your stay on the island.
At the Lopesan Group we have magnificent hotels where you can enjoy the best comforts and spend a dream vacation. We are waiting for you!
