What to do in Samana

You may be familiar with Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s main tourist destinations. However, Samaná may not be a familiar name, or perhaps you have never heard of it. The peninsula boasts a multitude of attractions, including miles of beaches, the opportunity to observe humpback whales, breathtaking waterfalls and spectacular viewpoints. These are just a few of the many must-see wonders of Samaná.

In this article, we would like to invite you to take a tour of the best places to visit in Samaná. Each one of them will offer you a unique experience that we are confident will leave you impressed.

Santa Bárbara

This is the capital of the Dominican Republic, situated in close proximity to the Malecón and renowned for its vibrant architectural heritage. The town is known for its picturesque character, particularly in the vicinity of its emblematic bridge, which is a must-see attraction for visitors. Crossing it at sunset offers an unforgettable and unique experience. A visit to this destination is considered complete only when one crosses its iconic bridge.

Go to Cayo Levantado

Cayo Levantado, also known as Bacardí Island, is located in close proximity to the Bay of Samaná. This island is notable for its role as the setting for an advertisement for the popular drink in the 1980s. While it is a popular tourist destination, it is not as crowded as other nearby islands, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy its beaches in a tranquil setting.

Humpback whale watching

Another of the activities available in Samaná is a whale-watching excursion, which is particularly popular from January to March. As you will see, tourists are not the only ones who come here to escape the cold; so do these animals, which, at this time of year, are in their reproductive phase.

Visit Las Terrenas

Although it is a charming fishing village, Las Terrenas has managed to evolve into a leading tourism destination. Its shops, hotels, restaurants and, of course, its eponymous beach of crystal-clear waters and fine sand have made it a highly sought-after location.

Monte Rojo Viewpoint

The town of Monte Rojo is located in Acosta and offers access to one of the most impressive viewpoints in the country, the Mirador de Monte Rojo. Its views of Cayo Levantado in the Dominican Republic and the bay are a true spectacle.

Salto del Limon waterfall

One of the country’s most impressive natural attractions, this 40-metre high waterfall is situated in an accessible location, offering convenient access to visitors. Excursions are available on foot or horseback for those seeking to explore the area. The result is a truly memorable experience, with unparalleled views and an opportunity for a refreshing swim.

Los Haitises National Park

We recommend taking this excursion from the capital of Samaná to Los Haitises National Park, which is renowned for serving as the setting for the blockbuster film Jurassic Park. This unique park boasts lush mangrove forests, caves that were once inhabited by the Taino Indians, and impressive karst mounds that emerge from the sea to reach40 metres in height.

Zip Line in El Valle

A further activity awaiting you in Samaná is the incredible zip line, the longest in the country as a whole. You will get your adrenaline up on the 12-cable zip line that ends at the Lulú waterfall (where you can dive in, if you feel like it).

Las Galeras

This small fishing village offers excellent accommodation and dining options, along with a long, palm-lined beach that provides a truly paradisiacal experience. Boats are also available for trips to other nearby beaches, which are highly recommended.

Visit the beautiful beaches of Samaná

Pack your bags and enjoy the unspoilt Caribbean beaches Samaná has to offer. Clear waters, white sands, lots of palm trees, and unforgettable sunsets are just a few of the many attractions you’ll find in this hidden gem of the Dominican Republic.

Frontón Beach

This is probably one of the best sandy beaches in the country, although it is actually a cove protected by a large rock. The most convenient way to get here is by one of the taxi boats that leave from Las Galeras. If you enjoy snorkelling, this is the ideal place to practise it and enjoy the coral reefs of this area.

Cosón beach

This long, sandy beach, which has been featured on the Spanish television show Temptation Island, offers a breathtaking natural spectacle. The area boasts a long, sandy beach surrounded by millions of palm trees, offering a distinctive landscape that will captivate any visitor.

Rincón beach

This beach is regarded as one of the most attractive in Samaná due to its lengthy shoreline and the fact that it is rarely crowded. Furthermore, at its southern end is the mouth of Caño Frío, a picturesque area with emerald green natural pools where swimming is possible amidst mangrove trees.

Madama beach

Access to this idyllic location is via boat or long walk, which contributes to its low visitor numbers. The lack of bars and restaurants ensures a direct and secluded connection with nature. As you may have observed, there are numerous attractions in Samaná. Undoubtedly, your trip will be unforgettable.
