But this island has much more to offer and one of the great unknowns is the museums of Fuerteventura. We take a look at its history and gastronomy, which will allow you to discover the most cultural side of this place.

Gastronomic museums

The island of Mallorca offers a wealth of gastronomic delights. Potatoes with mojo sauce, goat meat and limpets are some of the dishes it shares with neighbouring islands, but it also has more typical dishes made with fish from its coasts and, of course, Majorero cheese. All this history can be discovered in the three gastronomy museums on the island.

Salinas del Carmen Museum

The Salinas del Carmen are still the traditional producers of one of the most sought-after salts in the world of haute cuisine. This is where the museum is located. It tells the history of the place, which dates back to the 18th century. The mountains of salt and the whale skeleton create a picture-postcard setting that will leave you with unforgettable memories.

This is an interactive museum where you can book an activity to become a salinero for the day and experience the harvesting of this product from the inside. There is also a restaurant and a shop.

Opening hours are from 10:00 to 18:00 (May to October) and from 9:30 to 17:30 (rest of the year). Admission is €6 for adults and €3 for children aged 3-11, with a discount for residents.

Majorero Cheese Museum

One of the island’s most famous products is Majorero cheese. Made from goat’s milk, it has had a Denomination of Origin since 1996 and has a museum dedicated to it in the town of Antigua.

Along the way, you can learn about the history of the island, from the beginnings of goat farming to the arrival of the cheese. Of course, during your visit you will be able to discover the production process and taste different types of cheese if you wish.

Opening hours are from 10:00 to 18:00 (May to October) and from 9:30 to 17:30 (rest of the year). Admission is €4 for adults and €2.5 for children aged 3-11, with a discount for residents.

Museum of Traditional Fishing

Located in a lighthouse on the strait that separates Fuerteventura from Lanzarote, it has a striking red and white exterior. With its unique natural setting, it has become a must-see, and when you get there, you can visit the inside to discover the museum.

Inside you will find the different sustainable and traditional fishing methods used by the locals of the nearby village of El Cotillo. Undoubtedly an art handed down from generation to generation that will surprise you.

The museum is currently being restored and is therefore closed to the public. It is expected to reopen this summer and admission is €3 with a discount for residents.

History museums

If you want to get away from the gastronomy and discover the history of the island, the following museums are your best option. Here you’ll have the chance to learn about the history of the Maoh (the island’s aboriginal people) and some of the battles that took place here.

Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum

Located in Betancuria, a town known for being the first capital of the Canary Islands, this museum is dedicated to the promotion, exhibition and study of the island’s aboriginal population, the Mahos.

Thanks to the objects recovered from various archaeological sites, you can learn about the history and culture of the island, their beliefs and the strategies they used to survive in this area.

On arrival, you will find a modernist building with three interior rooms where you can discover all the research that has been carried out in this village in recent years. Activities such as conferences and other events are organised throughout the year.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and entry is free.

The archaeological museum lets you learn about the island’s ancient inhabitants. In this ancient settlement, more than 100 different buildings can be identified in an area that was very suitable for shepherding.

You can immerse yourself in the history of the Mahos in the Visitor Centre, where you can learn about the history of the place and how the different buildings were used. This is a great way to complement your visit to the Archaeological Museum, thanks to the guided tours on offer.

The site is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00, and guided tours usually take place at 10:30 and 12:30, although these times can vary depending on demand. Admission is free.

Interpretation Centre of the Battles of Cuchillite and Tamasite

This space is located in the Casa de las Simonas in Tuineje. It is dedicated to the history of the battles of Cuchillite and Tamasite, which took place in 1740. The English corsairs landed with the intention of plundering the village and were met with a fierce defence by the villagers, who were armed with whatever was closest to hand, such as stones and agricultural tools. The heroic nature of the battle has made 13 October one of the most important festivals on the island.

The centre is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 and entry is free. Now that you know the museums of Fuerteventura, it’s time to discover them.
