We have the ideal place for you to enjoy both: the Caldera de Bandama, located in Gran Canaria. It is a place you should not miss during your stay on the island.

At Lopesan, we want to offer you the best experience, so we bring you all the information you need to visit the Caldera de Bandama on your next holiday. Are you ready to discover everything about this ancient volcano?

What Is the Caldera de Bandama?

Gran Canaria was formed more than 2,000 years ago and has a volcanic origin. As its name suggests, the Caldera de Bandama is a volcanic caldera formed by the eruptions that occurred after the island was created. These shaped the land, which now has an area measuring 900 metres in diameter and 250 metres deep.

Likewise, the name Bandama comes from the Flemish merchant Daniel Van Damme, who bought the land in the 16th century for vine cultivation.

Do not worry, as the volcano has not been active for a very long time. The route has an elevation difference of approximately 411 metres, which is why we recommend wearing sturdy, non-slip footwear so you do not slip on the gravel surface.

How to Get to the Caldera de Bandama

If you want to reach the Caldera de Bandama, you should know that it is located 20 minutes from the centre of the island’s capital, between the municipalities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde and Santa Brígida. You can get there both by car and by public transport.

The public transport you need to take is the guagua, bus, 311 operated by Global, and get off at Bandama station. This will leave you at the start of the trail. Depending on your location, you can check how to take bus 311 to reach the Bandama stop.

If you have a car, take the GC-802 road from the Monte Lentiscal roundabout; you will not get lost. You will arrive at Bodega Hoyos de Bandama, where you can buy the much-loved Canarian wines or purchase a souvenir before starting the route. You can also look for a parking space in this area.

Hiking Caldera de Bandama

The Caldera de Bandama trail is long but manageable. If you practise hiking or trekking, you will find it quite easy to complete the 6.4 km route in approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace. Stay well hydrated, avoid carrying too much weight and, as mentioned before, wear good footwear.

View of the Caldera de Bandama, one of the most impressive volcanic landscapes in Gran Canaria.

Viewpoints and Places with History

Now, let us begin the route through the Caldera de Bandama. We start the path and approach the first viewpoint, where we will find historical information about the volcano and how the caldera was formed. You will also have an extraordinary view of the site. From there, you can see Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde and Santa Brígida.

In this place, you will find plenty of vegetation and typical flora of the area. So, if you are someone who enjoys disconnecting in nature, this is a unique experience to enjoy in Gran Canaria.

We will continue along the volcanic walls until we reach the Cornical Viewpoint, before arriving at Las Piedras, formed by ancient rocks that will guide us along the path to the Era de Victoriano. Here, we will see old constructions and learn more about the history of the place.

The Path Splits in Two

If you do not want to miss any detail during the trail, after crossing the Era de Victoriano, remember that the path splits in two. The first, shorter path leads you towards beautiful eucalyptus vegetation. Meanwhile, the longer path takes you to another old house known as Casa de Agustinito, full of history.

Do not worry, both paths will lead you to the emblematic site of the route: the Cuevas de las Bodegas. This is another ideal place to rest, eat and enjoy a good Canarian wine. It is the perfect plan before continuing with the trail.

Hiking inside the Caldera de Bandama, an ancient volcano in Gran Canaria.

Continue the Descent

We continue our route through the extensive Caldera de Bandama. From this point, you will notice that the trail becomes narrower. Therefore, we recommend taking that break if you are not used to this type of walk, but if you enjoy challenges or are used to this kind of activity, you can continue without any problem.

You will reach the El Culatón pond, where you can continue descending to reach the centre of the caldera and go down to a depth of 250 metres. And with that, you will have completed a wonderful route through the Caldera de Bandama.

During your journey through the Caldera de Bandama, you will find many places where you can make several stops to discover the flora of Gran Canaria, admire the views, learn about its history and even take the occasional break while enjoying the rich Canarian gastronomy.

At the Lopesan Group, we want to offer you the best travel experience.
