And if you know nothing about Popcorn Beach in Fuerteventura, no problem. In this article from the Lopesan Group Blog, we will give you all the details you need to know before setting out to visit this very unconventional beach.

Go for it!

What Is Popcorn Beach, or the Popcorn Beach in Fuerteventura?

Popcorn Beach in Fuerteventura is not an artificially created beach, but it cannot be compared with the famous Cofete Beach, on the western peninsula of Jandía, either. Here, you will not find kilometres of spectacular golden sand, but fossilised algae shaped like popcorn, known locally in the Canary Islands as roscas or cotufas.

This natural phenomenon reflects the diversity of natural landscapes found on the island of Fuerteventura and is undoubtedly one of the reasons for the large annual flow of visitors the island receives. Would you visit it?

Popcorn Beach in Fuerteventura covered with rhodoliths, the island’s famous natural “popcorn”.

How to Get to Popcorn Beach in Fuerteventura

The popcorn beach is located on the northern coast of the Canary Island, close to the well-known tourist town of Corralejo, in the municipality of La Oliva.

From Corralejo, you can get there on foot, although the path is quite long. It can take up to 1 hour walking, but if you enjoy walking, put on good shoes and comfortable clothes, and enjoy the scenery.

There are other alternative routes to reach Popcorn Beach in Fuerteventura. For example, if you arrive by car at the coastal area of Majanicho, you only need to park nearby and walk until you reach the famous popcorn beach.

Also, if you are staying in Jandía or Morro Jable, in the southern part of Fuerteventura, you must take the FV-22 to reach this curious beach. The journey takes approximately one and a half hours. Another option is to go by guagua, bus, using regular lines and changing in Puerto del Rosario.

Popcorn or Rhodoliths?

As much as these fossilised algae look like popcorn, there is no direct relationship. Want to know why they look so similar?

The fossilised algae found at Popcorn Beach in Fuerteventura are known as rhodoliths. These are red algae that are not attached to the seabed. For this reason, carbonate fossils form on the outside, creating large deposits that are carried by the sea and spread along the entire coast.

This type of algae appears in shallow areas, developing between 20 and 100 metres deep. Each of the Canary Islands has this type of striking geological formation in its waters.

While a rhodolith is alive, it is red or purplish in colour; once its cycle ends, it turns white, resembling popcorn.

Its development time is usually very slow, so it must not be removed from its natural habitat. These fossils are protected, and taking rhodoliths from Popcorn Beach Fuerteventura can lead to fines and penalties.

Rhodolith Nature Reserve at Popcorn Beach in Corralejo

The viral spread of #PopCornBeach brought thousands of tourists to visit this curious beach in Fuerteventura, which was a positive aspect for tourism in the Canary Islands. However, it also endangered the conservation of the beach when some tourists began taking bottles and bags filled with rhodoliths as souvenirs, damaging this ecosystem of the island of Fuerteventura. So much so that airport security guards had to confiscate containers full of these fossils.

Currently, there is a social media campaign, #pasasinhuellaporlaoliva, calling for an end to this illegal activity. Residents are also asking for a significant financial penalty to prevent this geological damage to the Canary coasts.

Rhodoliths on the popcorn beach, protected natural formations on the coast of Corralejo, Fuerteventura.

Visit Popcorn Beach in Fuerteventura

If you are going to visit Popcorn Beach Fuerteventura, we recommend wearing good grip footwear so you can walk on the rhodolith fossils safely.
