Garcey Beach and the Sunken Ship: the American Star<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Garcey Beach<\/strong> has a unique historical remnant stranded on its shores: the American Star<\/strong>, a ship that was wrecked more than 20 years ago<\/strong> and whose remains are still almost intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its time, the American Star<\/strong> was one of the most luxurious ships in the world. It required a major investment and was inaugurated in 1939<\/strong> by the First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 15 January 1994<\/strong>, the American Star, which was being towed, suffered a serious incident due to a storm that hit the Canary Islands, with waves of more than 8 metres high<\/strong>, strong winds and rain. The strong winds separated both vessels, preventing them from continuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its crew was rescued that same night, and the American Star was left adrift until it ran aground on the coast of Fuerteventura, in the waters of Garcey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many locals and tourists are surprised when they see the old, rusty \u201cmonument\u201d appearing off the coast of this unspoilt beach<\/strong>. The most surprising thing is that, after so many years, some of the ship\u2019s remains are still almost intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Get to Garcey Beach in Fuerteventura<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Together with Cofete Beach<\/strong>, Garcey in Fuerteventura is one of those destinations that is not very frequented by tourists, so if you are looking for a quieter place to visit during your holidays, you should not miss this beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To reach Garcey Beach in Fuerteventura<\/strong>, you must take the FV-605<\/strong> road, which connects La Pared<\/strong> and Costa Calma<\/strong>. After driving a few kilometres, you will find a turn-off towards Ajuy<\/strong>, which you should ignore unless you want to make a short stop to visit the unusual Ajuy Caves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you continue, about 4 kilometres south<\/strong>, you will reach the municipality of P\u00e1jara<\/strong>, where you will see a sign indicating the La Solapa \u2013 Garcey<\/strong> route. Take the next turn to the right, along a completely dirt road, and after about 5 kilometres<\/strong> you will find parking areas where you can leave your vehicle and visit Garcey Beach in Fuerteventura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do not have a car, no problem! You can reach Garcey by taking bus lines 01, 04 and 05<\/strong>. You will have to get off at Calle Garcey<\/strong> to enjoy a day in this charming place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surfing in Garcey, Fuerteventura<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most beaches on the west coast of Fuerteventura have strong waves<\/strong>, so you should be careful when swimming, but they are also ideal for surfing. For this reason, several surfing events and championships are held every year at Garcey Beach in Fuerteventura<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the best-known events in the area are the Garcey Bodyboard<\/strong> and the Surf Championship<\/strong>. Both bring together more than 200 high-level athletes<\/strong>, which is why they hold an important place in the calendar of surfers from the Canary Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are a fan of this water sport or practise it yourself, do not miss the opportunity to surf a few waves on this incredible beach. The currents of Garcey in Fuerteventura<\/strong> do not disappoint and can become a real challenge for any surf lover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within this municipality, you will also find other well-known tourist areas such as Costa Calma<\/strong> and Solana Matorral<\/strong>, where you can practise countless water sports or simply enjoy their turquoise waters and white sand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
