However, this island, one of the oldest in the Canary archipelago, hides a far more enigmatic and wild side.

Beyond the postcard images, volcanic geology and the force of the Atlantic have shaped shores with unusual forms and textures. Travelling along the Fuerteventura coast in search of its most curious beaches is almost like taking a journey through the history of the Earth, where fossils, black sand and shipwreck remains explain how this landscape was formed.

In this article, we explore the island’s most curious beaches and give you some key tips for planning your route and choosing the right accommodation in Fuerteventura.

Popcorn Beach

In the north of the island, near Corralejo, lies one of the beaches that has attracted the most attention in recent years. This is Playa del Hierro, although today it is known worldwide as Popcorn Beach. What makes this place unique is not the sand, but the composition of its shore, covered with thousands of rhodoliths: white calcareous red algae which, after dying and being bleached by the sun, perfectly imitate the shape of popcorn.

Despite their mineral appearance, these pieces grow on the ocean floor and, once their life cycle ends, are carried by the current to the coast. This process is extremely slow; it is estimated that these algae increase in volume by barely one millimetre in diameter per year, which means that the specimens seen on the shore may have hundreds of years of history.

It is important to remember that this environment is a protected ecosystem. Although curiosity may make you want to take a keepsake, removing these rhodoliths affects the regeneration of the coast. Visiting this beach is a spectacle: walking over this blanket of white algae with the silhouette of the Bayuyo volcano in the background is one of those experiences you do not forget.

Ajuy beach

Travelling to the village of Ajuy, on the west coast, means going back millions of years. Here, the sand is not golden, but an intense jet black that shines under the sun and contrasts with the white foam of the sea. This beach sits on the island’s basal complex, which means you are standing on the oldest rocks in the whole of the Canary Islands, the ones that emerged from the ocean floor when the archipelago began to form. It is, without doubt, one of the black sand beaches in Fuerteventura that best preserves its volcanic force.

What makes Ajuy beach so curious is its surrounding fossil dunes, whitish in colour, which seem to hang over the dark sand. The chromatic contrast is fascinating. In addition, the right-hand side of the beach gives access to monumental volcanic caves where the sea roars with great force. It is an overwhelming and magnetic landscape.

Ajuy beach, a setting of contrasts between black sand and the pale cliffs. Photo by Holaislascanarias.com

Garcey beach

Few beaches in the world have such a cinematic historical charge as Garcey beach, in the municipality of Pájara. For years, this corner was the resting place of the American Star, a luxury ocean liner that ran aground in its waters in 1994. Although time and sea salt eventually sank the remains of the ship, its aura of mystery remains intact on the shore.

Garcey beach is wild and difficult to access, which has helped it preserve its essence. The sand mixes dark tones with pale stones and fragments of pumice, creating a very particular texture. The currents are strong and the caves are carved directly into the cliff; from here, you can feel the force of a sea that has shaped the history of the shipwrecks in this part of the island.

La Solapa beach

Very close to Garcey, you will find La Solapa beach, a gem for lovers of photography and absolute tranquillity. Its main curiosity lies in the changing nature of its landscape. Depending on the tide and the force with which the sea has beaten against the shore in the previous days, the beach may reveal a stretch of golden sand or expose a black volcanic stone floor that completely changes its appearance.

The cliffs that protect it have hollows and striking shapes that act as a natural shelter from the wind. It is a beach of constant contrasts, where the silence is only broken by the sound of the Atlantic. Walking along La Solapa feels like finding a private refuge in the middle of an island that, despite tourism, still keeps secrets for those willing to leave the marked routes behind.

Cofete beach

You cannot talk about curious beaches in Fuerteventura without mentioning Cofete. Its interest does not lie, as in other cases, in a strange material or unusual colour, but in its scale: more than 12 kilometres of untouched coastline guarded by the Jandía Massif. In fact, the area is a reference point for discovering hiking in Jandía, with routes that cross the peaks before descending towards the shore.

It is a truly remote place where it is common for mist to descend from the peaks and the wind to blow strongly. It also has elements that make it unique, such as a small cemetery on the sand itself and Casa Winter, a building located on the hillside and surrounded by legends linked to the Second World War.

El Puertito de Lobos

Just a few minutes by boat from Corralejo lies Lobos Islet, a protected natural park where human intervention is barely noticeable. In the El Puertito area, the coast breaks up into small coves and natural pools surrounded by black volcanic rock.

The curiosity here is the transparency of the water. As the seabed is made up of dark rock and very fine white sand, the sea takes on absolute clarity, creating the effect of a natural infinity pool. The wooden walkways crossing over the water allow you to observe the seabed as if it were a giant aquarium. It is an unspoilt setting, without asphalt or modern buildings, showing the gentlest and clearest face of Fuerteventura’s volcanic landscape.

Crystal-clear waters and wooden walkways in the unspoilt surroundings of El Puertito, on Lobos Islet. Photo by Holaislascanarias.com

Tips for visiting Fuerteventura’s coast

Visiting these beaches requires different planning from a conventional beach day. Many of them are located on the western side of the island, where the sea is much rougher and currents are constant; swimming should therefore be done with extreme caution.

In addition, to reach places such as Cofete or Garcey, it is advisable to have a suitable vehicle, as access routes are often dirt and stone tracks. Finally, Fuerteventura’s golden rule: do not take anything with you. Not black sand, not volcanic stones and certainly not the rhodoliths from Popcorn Beach. The value of these beaches lies in their geological integrity.

To visit these corners calmly, IFA by Lopesan Hotels offers two excellent options in the south of the island, both located in Morro Jable. IFA Altamarena Hotel is a four-star hotel ideal for family travel, with direct access to Jandía beach and a full programme of sports activities and shows for all ages.

If you are looking for a more exclusive and flexible atmosphere, IFA Villas Altamarena are located on the seafront with panoramic views of the Atlantic.
