Berlin, 5th March 2025 – Lopesan for Good is the guarantee and commitment seal designed to highlight Lopesan Hotel Group's dedication and the challenge of minimising the impact generated by tourism activity, through the implementation of green policies. During the second day of ITB, the Commercial Department team in Berlin confirmed that the sustainable development led by the company attracts new generations of German travellers and is perceived as a differentiating factor when planning their holidays.
Lopesan Hotel Group has set the objective of creating appealing incentives for these young customers, not only from the German market but also as part of the corporate strategy implemented in the company's main source countries. In this regard, green policies play an essential role, as environmental protection and social well-being are factors that influence the entire customer journey, from the initial search for options, during the purchasing process, and even impacting each guest's perception during their stay.
The Councillor for Tourism of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, had the opportunity to discuss with Lopesan Hotel Group's General Manager, José Alba, the details of the challenge set to achieve the total decarbonisation of its activity by 2030. Lopesan Group has focused on promoting tasks aimed at detecting, reducing, preventing, and mitigating CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere, through a strict calculation of each hotel's carbon footprint, audited by the external company MITECO. Last year, the company managed to reduce its carbon footprint by 79.2% compared to the base year, thanks to the electrification of thermal energy sources, the use of more efficient alternatives, and the utilisation of 100% renewable energy.
The development of Finca de Veneguera and the consumption of local produce form an important part of Lopesan for Good, capable of producing 1,224 tonnes of zero-kilometre fruit and vegetables, which means that 21% of the food consumed by guests in Gran Canaria hotels carries the organic produce seal. All this fruit and vegetables originate from sustainable agriculture models, based on the use of biological pest controls and no pesticides. Furthermore, organic waste and pruning from the hotels are used to create compost that aids the regeneration of the farm.
Lopesan Group has implemented the Buffet Waste tool to control food waste generated from buffet overexposure, achieving a 22% reduction in food waste in the company's restaurants, in terms of kg/service ratio. Thanks to the agreement signed with Nespresso, Lopesan Group managed to recycle 246,800 capsules in 2023, representing 45% of those consumed, allowing both the aluminium to be reused for new purposes and the coffee grounds to be transformed into fertiliser. Through this action, the popular coffee brand has produced 176 tonnes of rice in the fields of the Ebro Delta, which have been donated by Nespresso to the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL), as part of its Solidarity Rice Project.
