Surfing in Gran Canaria can be an extraordinary experience, as this island has the privilege of having some of the best spots in Europe. The Canary Islands in general are a true paradise for surf lovers, as their coasts offer the perfect conditions for practising this discipline. Take the plunge and live the adventure!
San Agustín beach
Located in the south of Gran Canaria, this stretch of coastline extends from Las Puntillas (to the east) to Punta de Las Burras (to the west), and belongs to the town of the same name in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
It is a strategic location if you want to start surfing in Gran Canaria, as there are several companies that provide lessons and hire the necessary equipment. In addition, the clean, calm waters and family atmosphere make San Agustín beach the best place to share this experience with your children.
El Frontón, Gáldar
If you are an experienced rider, the north of Gran Canaria is the best place to catch waves. Many experts consider El Frontón, in Gáldar, to be the fifth best wave in the world. This is undoubtedly one of the attractions that attracts surfers from all over the world.
The tubes that form on the rocky bottom require courage and experience. The wave breaks in two directions, to the right and to the left, forming two waves that collide in the middle, causing a big bang. This makes it possible to perform jumps and manoeuvres of a high technical level.
Gáldar is also famous for hosting one of the IBC (International Bodyboarding Corporation) World Circuit events, making it a must for bodyboarding enthusiasts.
La Cícer beach
La Cícer, in Las Canteras, is one of the most popular beaches for surfers. Punta Brava, as it used to be called, is considered the cradle of this sport, as it was the enclave where beginners gathered to catch their first waves when this discipline was still in its infancy in Spain.
It starts at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, the southern end of the coastal path, and continues to La Peña. It is a beach suitable for all levels of surfers and bodyboarders, especially beginners.
As there is no barrier to slow down the swell, as there is at other beaches in the area, it is the place where the biggest waves are created.
a Cícer is generally frequented by locals, although it is a spot where competitions and events are held throughout the year.

Confital beach
Along with Lloret in Las Canteras, Confital beach is one of the best surfing spots in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. With one of the best reef breaks in Europe, it is a regular venue for some of the most important world championships.
The beach has a direct link with the city and can be reached in a short time, whether walking or driving. You won’t have any trouble finding it!
Sardina del Norte beach
Located in the municipality of Gáldar, in the north of Gran Canaria, this beautiful coastal town has a beach of the same name. This is a place where you can enjoy a wide range of nautical activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling and surfing.
It is also one of the most popular spots for beginners to surf in Gran Canaria, due to its calm and crystal clear waters. Due to its characteristics, Sardina del Norte is ideal for beginners, but also for those who practise other sports such as paddle boarding or kayaking.
Vagabundos beach
This beach belongs to the municipality of Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria, in the northwest of the island. It has volcanic sand and pebbles and is very popular with surfing and bodyboarding enthusiasts. The waves at Vagabundos beach are fast and break to the left.
The break is about 50 metres from the shore, as at this distance the sandy seabed rises almost to the surface at low tide. This creates waves of one to two metres, with sequences for tube surfing and technically challenging manoeuvres.

Playa del Hombre beach
Beginners and experts alike can enjoy all that this beach, located in Telde on the east coast of Gran Canaria, has to offer. The constant influence of the trade winds in the area creates a strong swell that is common throughout the year.
Playa del Hombre is a place where surfing championships and other events are often held, so we recommend a visit if you are passionate about this discipline. There are schools in the area offering courses and equipment hire. The waves are usually powerful and large, so if you are taking your first steps, we recommend that you seek the advice of professionals rather than going it alone.
As you have seen, it is easy to find numerous first-class surfing spots in Gran Canaria. If you are a passionate or experienced surfer, the island is a must. If you are looking for a hotel in Gran Canaria, at the Lopesan Hotel Group we can offer you accommodation that is strategically located so that you have easy access to these beaches and can enjoy all the comforts.
