Do you want to see some of the most beautiful villages in Spain and enjoy delicious Majorero-style cheeses? Or swim and enjoy unforgettable sunsets on white sandy beaches? Then don’t hesitate—you will surely want to visit Fuerteventura. Here we explain in detail the different options you have to reach the island.
Fuerteventura is one of the largest islands in the Canary Islands, with remarkable natural landscapes, unique spots, and places to visit. If you have doubts when choosing the best type of transport, below we provide some tips on how to get to Fuerteventura and the benefits each option offers.
In this article, we will help you choose the best way to get to Fuerteventura whether you are traveling with your family, partner, friends, or on your own, depending on your needs.
Different ways to get to Fuerteventura
How to get to Fuerteventura, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, will depend on your place of origin. This island is well connected, as it has several transport options to reach it.
How to get to Fuerteventura by plane?
There are direct flights from several cities on the Spanish mainland, such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, or Santiago de Compostela. If there are no direct flights from your nearest airport, but there are flights to other Canary Islands such as Gran Canaria, Tenerife, or Lanzarote, you can easily take another flight from those islands to Fuerteventura.
Fuerteventura also has direct international flight connections. For example, there are direct flights from countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Norway, England, the Netherlands, Italy, or Sweden.
If you are traveling from another Canary Island or need a connecting flight, there are several airlines operating between the islands. These companies offer frequent flights throughout the archipelago.
How to get to Fuerteventura by boat?
If you are traveling between islands, taking a ferry will not take much time and can be a very attractive option if you have a car (check rental agency policies) and want to avoid complications with luggage. Islands such as Gran Canaria, Tenerife, or Lanzarote are connected to Fuerteventura.
You can also reach the Canary Islands by ferry from mainland cities such as Cádiz or Huelva.
There are two companies, Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas, that operate ferries to and from Fuerteventura. We recommend comparing schedules and prices between both companies.
Both companies operate from the same ports. Your choice will depend on your travel schedule. Prices also vary depending on the time and whether you travel with a vehicle. Therefore, we recommend comparing schedules and prices before booking.
Plane or boat?
The decision is not only about luggage, whether you are traveling with a car, or price. You should also consider location. If you arrive in Fuerteventura by plane, the airport is near the capital, Puerto del Rosario, in the east of the island. In the capital, you will find many shops that may be useful before heading to your accommodation, especially if you are traveling to the south of the island, where our hotels IFA Altamarena and Villas Altamarena are located.
On the other hand, depending on where your ferry departs from, it will arrive at a different port. Ferries from Lanzarote arrive in Corralejo, in the north of the island. This is convenient if you are staying in the north or center, but keep in mind that it takes nearly two hours by car to reach Morro Jable in the south.
There are also ferries that arrive at the port of Morro Jable, in the south of the island, very close to our hotels, beautiful beaches, and windsurfing areas. Choosing your ferry is simple: just check the websites of the two companies mentioned. You can buy your ticket online or at the port ticket office. However, keep in mind that during peak season tickets may sell out if you wait until the last minute.

How to get around Fuerteventura?
Are you interested in the many attractions of Fuerteventura mentioned at the beginning of this article? Then the best option is to rent a car. Points of interest are connected by roads suitable for standard vehicles, and you will discover hidden gems that often go unnoticed in travel guides.
Imagine how many landscapes, cheese factories, and craft shops you can find on this island. They will give your trip a special charm. There are still many places on the island that have not been discovered by mass tourism. Keep in mind that if you want to visit remote beaches like Cofete, you will need to drive on stone roads better suited for a 4×4 vehicle. However, you can also reach them with a standard car if you drive carefully and patiently.
We are fortunate that our hotels in Morro Jable are close to this area, but the road is winding and not suitable for high speeds. You can rent a vehicle from our hotels, so you can postpone your decision until you arrive.
There are urban buses (in major towns) and interurban buses. However, they do not run very frequently, which means you may lose travel time and flexibility. You can combine them with taxis to reach destinations faster. If you plan to travel this way, make sure you have taxi phone numbers handy in Fuerteventura.
Another good option for sightseeing without renting a car is to take organized excursions. But first, consider your interests: do they visit the places you really want to see?
You can also plan excursions that include transportation or departures near your hotel and rent a car only on certain days. This will make your trip more affordable and allow you to relax on days when you do not need to drive. Now that you know how to get to Fuerteventura, if you need accommodation during your stay, at Lopesan Hotel Group we offer hotels located in the sunny south of the island. Your dream vacation is waiting for you!
