Morro Velosa viewpoint
Nestled among the stunning protected landscapes of the Betancuria Rural Park lies a natural gem that you simply cannot miss: the Morro Velosa viewpoint. Designed by the renowned artist César Manrique, this viewpoint is strategically located in the central-western region of the island.
From this viewpoint in Betancuria, at an altitude of 669 metres, you can enjoy an incomparable panoramic view of the Canary Islands sky, the perfect place for nature lovers and stargazers alike. As well as offering breathtaking views, the Morro Velosa viewpoint is also a cultural and educational experience. The building has an interpretive trail that highlights the values of the Biosphere Reserve, the island’s landscapes, climate and native flora and fauna, as well as temporary exhibitions.
Designed by César Manrique
The Morro Velosa viewpoint was designed by the renowned architect and artist César Manrique. Known for his ability to seamlessly integrate architecture into the natural environment, Manrique shows his distinctive style in this viewpoint, combining traditional elements with a modern aesthetic.
The viewpoint reflects his commitment to landscape conservation. The soft lines and large windows allow natural light and the beauty of the surrounding landscape to flood the interior. In addition, the informative displays within the viewpoint illustrate the geography, history and culture of Fuerteventura, embodying Manrique’s holistic approach to his projects.
The project
According to the architect Blanca Cabrera, who supervised the project, the design for the viewpoint was presented to the Fuerteventura Town Hall a day or two before Manrique’s death in September 1992. Manrique had been invited by the Cabildo to design the viewpoint, and once the site had been selected, he began work on the project.
César Manrique’s involvement and legacy
César Manrique developed the conceptual design, while Blanca Cabrera took care of the technical aspects. Although not formally trained as an architect, Manrique had a clear and detailed vision for his projects. However, due to his untimely death, he was unable to supervise the construction or add his characteristic finishing touches. For this reason, the César Manrique Foundation does not recognise the Morro Velosa viewpoint as a complete work by the artist. The Foundation believes that the artist’s participation in the construction and finishing stages is essential for a work to be considered authentically his.
Subsequent changes and modifications
Blanca Cabrera notes that after Manrique’s death, further changes were made to the viewpoint without his input. For example, the interior layout was changed and elements such as a partition and the repositioning of the toilets, which the designers had not originally liked, were added.
Manrique had also planned to surround the viewpoint with trees to minimise the visual impact of the building, a concept that was never implemented. He also designed a logo with a goat made of Corten steel, similar to the one he created for Lanzarote’s Art, Culture and Tourism Centres, but this detail was never implemented.
Manrique advised the Cabildo of Fuerteventura to manage the centre directly. However, after several closures, the management of the viewpoint remains undefined.
Stargazing
The Morro Velosa viewpoint not only offers stunning panoramic views during the day, but also transforms into an excellent stargazing spot at night. In the late summer months, looking northwest in the early evening, you can clearly see the constellation Cassiopeia, one of the most distinctive in the northern hemisphere, with its characteristic “W” shape hanging above the horizon. Not far from there is the constellation Ursa Minor, with the North Star pointing the way north. The luminous band of the Milky Way stretches across the sky, offering a spectacular sight.
Between the constellations of Cassiopeia and Cepheus lies M52, a beautiful cluster of newly formed young stars. This star cluster is visible with binoculars and appears as a small heap of stars, a fascinating view of the cosmos.

Location and how to get there
The Morro Velosa viewpoint is located between the Betancuria Massif Rural Park and the Santa Inés valley, on the Tegu mountain. From this privileged viewpoint you can see the coastal town of El Cotillo and Tindaya Mountain to the north. To the south-east you can see the town of Antigua and the volcanoes near the village of Tiscamanita.
To get to the Morro Velosa lookout, in the Rural Park of Betancuria, head towards the mountain of the same name, between Betancuria and the Santa Inés valley. The viewpoint is 9 kilometres from Betancuria and can be reached by car in about 15 minutes.
