Volcanoes of Fuerteventura: routes, viewpoints and fascinating facts

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Fuerteventura is known for its long beaches and sweeping dunes, yet its true character lies in its origins. The island’s landscape has been shaped by ancient eruptions that left behind a distinctive terrain of lava fields and craters that often feel almost otherworldly. If you are looking for something beyond sun and beach loungers, climbing a volcano in Fuerteventura is one of the best ways to understand the island’s geological force.

Exploring these dormant giants offers not only spectacular views but also the deep sense of calm that defines the island’s interior. In this guide we look at the volcanoes you should not miss and how to explore them step by step.

Calderón Hondo

If you only have time for one hike, Calderón Hondo is an excellent choice. It is one of the best-preserved volcanoes in the Bayuyo volcanic chain, and its crater is simply striking.

The route from Lajares

The route is straightforward and suitable for most visitors. It begins in the village of Lajares, where a well-marked path leads gradually towards the summit. As you climb, the ground becomes more reddish and the landscape increasingly arid, until you reach the edge of the crater at around 278 metres above sea level.

From the viewpoint at the top you can look directly into the depths of the volcano. It is common to see Barbary ground squirrels along the path (visitors are asked not to feed them), and on clear days the panoramic view stretches across the north of the island, reaching Lanzarote and Lobos Island.

Other volcanoes in Fuerteventura worth visiting

Although Calderón Hondo attracts much of the attention, there are several other places that geology enthusiasts should explore to appreciate the variety of landscapes created by Fuerteventura’s volcanoes.

Volcán de la Arena and its lava fields

Located near La Oliva, Volcán de la Arena is notable because it was among the last volcanoes to erupt on the island. The eruption created an extensive malpaís landscape — fields of solidified lava that form a dramatic and visually striking environment. Vegetation here is scarce, which enhances the feeling of walking through a lunar landscape. It is also a quieter area, ideal if you are looking for a more peaceful hiking experience.

The Bayuyo volcanic chain: from Corralejo to Lajares

This line of aligned volcanoes is responsible for extending the northern part of the island into the sea thousands of years ago. If you enjoy hiking, you can follow a route that links several of these craters. It is a different way to discover the volcanoes of Fuerteventura without straying far from the tourist areas around Corralejo.

Montaña de Tindaya: volcano or natural monument?

It is impossible to speak about the volcanoes of Fuerteventura without mentioning Tindaya. Although its solitary profile rises prominently from the plains of La Oliva, it is technically not a volcano but an intrusive rock formation — magma that cooled beneath the surface before emerging.

For the ancient Majos, this was the “Sacred Mountain”. Today it is a major archaeological and geological site, known for its podomorph engravings — ancient carvings shaped like human footprints — and for the distinctive beauty of its trachyte stone. Although climbing the mountain is currently restricted in order to protect these engravings, viewing its silhouette from nearby viewpoints is an essential stop on any route exploring the volcanoes of Fuerteventura.

Cueva del Llano

If climbing a crater is not enough, in Fuerteventura you can even step inside one. Near the village of Villaverde lies Cueva del Llano, a volcanic lava tube formed after the eruption of Volcán de la Arena.

It is one of the oldest lava tubes in the Canary Islands, and visiting it helps explain how lava moves beneath the surface of the Earth. The cave is also home to a species found nowhere else in the world: the Maiorerus randoi, a small blind and pale spider that lives only inside this cave. It offers a different kind of experience in Fuerteventura if you want a brief escape from the island’s intense sunshine.

Tips for your volcanic route

Climbing a volcano in Fuerteventura does not require elite fitness, but a little preparation and common sense will help ensure a comfortable experience.

  1. The wind: At the summits the wind can be very strong. Bring a light jacket even if it feels warm on the coast.
  2. Footwear: Forget sandals. Volcanic terrain is uneven, and loose lava stones can be sharp. Good trainers or hiking boots are strongly recommended.
  3. Respect the environment: These are protected landscapes. Stay on marked paths and avoid taking volcanic rocks as souvenirs — the island needs them more than your shelf does.

Fuerteventura beyond its craters

After a day of hiking, most visitors look forward to relaxing. Fuerteventura offers a striking contrast between its rugged black volcanic rock and the softness of its beaches. After descending from a volcano, the coast is never far away. Many routes in the north of the island can end at the Corralejo Dunes, bringing the day full circle between fire and sand.

Exploring the volcanoes of Fuerteventura may tire the body, but it leaves the mind inspired. At Lopesan Hotel Group we believe contrast is at the heart of a memorable holiday: the adventure of discovering ancient craters during the day, followed by the comfort of complete relaxation at night.

That is why both the IFA Altamarena Hotel and the IFA Villas Altamarena are designed to be that welcoming retreat after a day of exploring. Few things compare to returning from the stark beauty of a volcanic landscape to the sea breeze of Jandía and a service designed to make you feel completely at home.
