Places to visit when you come to Arucas

This very pleasant and quiet town is located in the north of the island, just 17 kilometres from the capital. It has some of the most outstanding places on the island. Any time is a good time to discover its attractions, whether during popular fiestas such as that of its patron saint, Saint John the Baptist, or on Saturdays when the local street market is held. Plaza de San Juan square and San Juan Bautista church

The Plaza de San Juan, the centre of local life, is the main square in the town. Surrounded by houses with typical balconies, it stands out for its traditional Canarian architecture. This is where most of the fiestas and cultural activities take place.

The church of San Juan Bautista, one of the most important examples of neo-Gothic architecture in Gran Canaria, is also located in this part of the town. Although it is not a basilica, the islanders call it the Cathedral of Arucas because of its majesty. As a matter of fact, the bell tower is 60 metres high.

Plaza de la Constitución square and Town Hall

In Plaza de la Constitución we find two very interesting buildings from the end of the 19th century: the Antiguo Mercado de Arucas (Old Market of Arucas) and the City Hall. The building that houses the Town Hall dates from 1875 and is notable for its main façade, made up of five semicircular arches. Inside there is a plaque commemorating the naming of the town by Queen María Cristina.

Arucas municipal park

This park is known as the Municipal Flower Garden and is a very interesting place to visit. This botanical space combines the English style, which is very common on the island, with French geometry. During the visit, which is completely free of charge, you can see a total of 200 species of ornamental plants, some of which are native to the Canary Islands.

Water heritage of Arucas and Firgas

Among the things to see in Arucas is this system of historic canals and irrigation channels. The Heredad de Aguas is used for agricultural irrigation, both in this town and in neighbouring Firgas.

It is an example of traditional Canarian hydraulic engineering to manage the distribution of water through secondary canals. One of the most important elements is the clock on the façade, which serves as a reference for measuring time.

If there is one place worth visiting in Arucas, it is Calle León y Castillo. Located in the very heart of the old town, it is the perfect place to have a drink, go shopping or just admire the historic and modern buildings.

As a tourist, you can also enjoy the traditional Canarian façades. This is one of the main thoroughfares of the city, where some of the most important local fairs and markets are held.

Jardín de la Marquesa garden

This beautiful garden is very close to the historic centre of the city. This estate, which belonged to the Marquise of Arucas, is now a romantic garden that combines ornamental elements with a great variety of botanical species, such as the hundred-year-old dragon trees.

Among the many things to do in Arucas, a visit to its many museums is a must. You can visit the Arucas Municipal Museum, the Banana Museum, the La Cantera Museum, the Labrante Interpretation Centre and the La Cerera Archaeological Site, among others.

Offering incredible panoramic views, this tourist route passes by several of the island’s old windmills. It starts in the historic centre of the city and passes through the nearby villages of Firgas, Teror and Moya.Gofio is one of the most important traditional foods in the Canary Islands. Arehucas rum factory

A visit to the Arehucas rum factory is highly recommended if you want to sample the island’s typical liqueurs. It has become an icon of the island as it is the oldest rum distillery in Europe. The company was founded in 1884 and has gained great recognition for its quality. A guided tour of the facilities will give you the opportunity to taste the products of this brand. 

El Puertillo Bañaderos beach

This small cove of black sand is ideal for relaxing and enjoying a good swim. It is very well maintained and offers all the comforts and services, such as security, showers, footbaths and parking. The water is usually calm and the rocks of this beach act as a natural barrier for anchoring and unloading boats.

Los Charcones de Arucas bathing area

On the coast you will find one of the city’s bathing areas, which has been awarded the Blue Flag: Los Charcones. It is accessible to people with reduced mobility, whether they want to enjoy the swimming pools or the benefits of seawater.

These artificial enclaves are equipped with stairs, breakwaters and ramps that allow you to enjoy the marine life. It is undoubtedly one of the most visited places by the locals.
