The Integral Natural Reserve of Inagua is a natural spot of great importance on the island of Gran Canaria, since it is part of a network of protected areas that includes a total of thirty-three areas. Since its first designation as a Natural Park in 1987, and its subsequent elevation to Integral Natural Reserve in 1994, it has been a vital pillar for the conservation of biodiversity and ecological processes in the region.  In this article, we will show you some of the most interesting aspects of this magnificent reserve and suggest some activities for your visit.

Inagua Natural Reserve

As we have explained, the Integral Natural Reserve of Inagua is a treasure trove of biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes. With an average altitude of 1,000 meters and peaks over 1,400 meters, this enclave is home to unique flora and fauna adapted to its mountainous and rugged environment.

Unique biodiversity

The cliffs and walls of Inagua are home to numerous endemic species of great scientific value. Species such as the Jarilla de Inagua or the Hairy Turmeric are exclusive to this reserve and contribute to its uniqueness within the Canary Archipelago. It has also been declared a Special Protection Area for birds.

Flora and fauna

The Inagua Nature Reserve is home to a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna. Among the most outstanding species is the Gran Canaria blue chaffinch, whose main refuge is in the pine forests of the reserve. Other residents are the woodpecker and the blue tit, which find in these forests a favorable habitat for their development.

The Canary Island pine is the predominant tree species in the reserve, forming dense forests intermingled with tabaibas, rockroses and escobones. Throughout history, human exploitation has left its mark on these forests, but thanks to the protection measures established, the Inagua Integral Nature Reserve has managed to preserve its natural wealth.
