The Ajuy caves in Fuerteventura: how to get there and what to do

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Today we are bringing you another magical place to visit: Ajuy, in Fuerteventura. An essential stop, a must for lovers of charm and simplicity. This picturesque fishing village, whose main activity is fishing, hides one of the most important natural geological monuments on the island: the famous Ajuy Caves.

Ajuy: a charming coastal village

If you are looking for a place away from the main tourist centres of the island, Ajuy is the ideal destination. Its narrow streets, lined with whitewashed houses in shades of blue, invite you to lose yourself in its tranquil and picturesque atmosphere. Situated by the sea, far from the big hotels and the hustle and bustle, Ajuy is the perfect retreat for those seeking tranquillity and authenticity. Surrounded by a ravine and a beautiful black sand inlet known as the Beach of the Dead, this village is a must on your holiday itinerary.

In addition to its natural beauty, Ajuy hides a historical treasure: it was the place where Jean de Béthencourt, the conqueror of the Canary Islands, landed in the 15th century. This explorer, a native of Normandy (France), founded the town of Betancuria, the former capital of Fuerteventura, not far from Ajuy. A visit to Betancuria is a must for anyone interested in the island’s history.

This setting has also witnessed a history marked by the extraction, exploitation and export of lime, an activity that has left its mark on the area. The lime kilns found in the area are tangible evidence of this historical activity, as are the remains of the davit and the small wharf nearby.

Ajuy caves: how to get there

The best way to get to Ajuy is by car, which gives you more freedom of movement and does not depend on timetables or combinations of transport. When you arrive in the village, there is a large car park at the entrance. If you don’t have a car, you can get there by bus. The Pájara line runs from some of the nearby towns.

As for the Ajuy caves, they are easy to get to. From the town centre, simply follow the path that leads to the coast. The path is well signposted and you won’t get lost. Along the way you will enjoy breathtaking views of the coast and the volcanic landscape that characterises the region.

Once you reach the coast, the entrance to the caves is clearly visible. Please note that the terrain can be uneven, so it is important to wear comfortable walking shoes. Also take care when exploring the caves as some areas may be slippery or uneven.

Ajuy: the caves and their origins

A hundred years old, the Ajuy Caves are a natural wonder that tell the first chapters of Fuerteventura’s history. These rock formations, considered to be among the oldest in the Canary Islands, date back more than 100 million years.

They were formed by a colossal submarine eruption of lava and sediment that came up from the depths of the ocean and formed the base on which the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote were to be established. These rocks, which emerged from the ocean crust at a depth of around 3,000 metres, became known as the Basal Complex.

Legend has it that many pirates hid their treasures in these caves, giving them an air of mystery. Moreover, the fact that Béthencourt invaded Fuerteventura from here (as we have already mentioned) increases its historical value.

The Ajuy Caves were declared a National Monument in 1987 due to the great variety of igneous and volcanic sediments they contain, and their geological and palaeontological importance places them among the 150 most outstanding sites in the world. This spectacular site, overlooking the sea, offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in an ancient and fascinating world, where the grandeur of the volcanic and igneous sediments and their geological and palaeontological importance place it among the 150 most outstanding sites in the world in this field.
