The 6 best places to surf in Fuerteventura

TABLE OF CONTENTS

When it comes to destinations for water sports, the Canary Islands are at the forefront as one of the most popular and sought-after places among surfers, whether they are beginners, amateurs or more advanced surfers. The reason? The huge number of waves suitable for this sport, just like other activities such as kitesurfing. Curious to know more? In this article, we bring you 6 must-visit places to surf in Fuerteventura.

Alongside the exceptional climate that accompanies the island all year round, the large waves sought after by the most experienced surfers can be found in the months running from October to April.

However, if you are just starting to stand up on the board and want to improve your technique with smaller waves, the island also allows you to do so during the summer at many beaches that are true sporting paradises.

If you are interested in discovering exactly where to surf in Fuerteventura, join us in this post where, from the Lopesan Group Blog, we will share the secrets of the island’s top surfing spots.

Our favourite beaches for surfing in Fuerteventura

Let’s take a look at the most popular spots, both for local surfers and for those visiting the island from abroad:

Los Lobos

Let’s start big with Los Lobos Beach. However, this is not exactly a beach for those who are just beginning to surf. The volcanic island of Los Lobos is usually chosen by the most experienced surfers, as it is characterised by having large waves, which result in both blue and transparent tubes.

To get there, the best option is to depart from the port of Corralejo and, once on the island, walk between 20 and 30 minutes until reaching the perfect surf spots for your level. It won’t be too difficult and you will enjoy a spectacular natural setting.

Playa del Hierro

We continue our list of recommended places for surfing in Fuerteventura aimed at true experts, as this is exactly what the waves at Playa del Hierro offer to the most experienced surfers.

The intense swell and the accompanying winds cause the waves to break against the rocks of the volcanic reef, creating exceptional conditions for those looking for challenging experiences.

To get there, you need to head to the north of the island, specifically to the fishing village area of Majanicho.

El Cotillo

For those looking for places to surf in Fuerteventura at an intermediate or advanced level, this is the perfect spot to gather a group of friends and enjoy a day full of new challenges and adventures on the water.

It is also worth mentioning that for beginners this is a perfect location during the summer season. If you are on holiday in summer and your goal is to improve or get back into surfing, El Cotillo is exactly what you have been looking for.

However, if you feel fully prepared to take on bigger waves, winter is the season when El Cotillo becomes truly attractive. The beach conditions and stronger winds bring larger waves for those who enjoy going “to the adrenaline limit”.

To get there, you should head to the small harbour in El Cotillo, and before reaching the village, take the gravel road. Once there, your next surfing adventure will be waiting at the foot of the hill.

El Moro

Since we have already talked about places for surfing in Fuerteventura for more experienced surfers, let’s lower the level a little and provide alternatives for those who are just starting out in this sport. For example, El Moro Beach is one place we highly recommend.

The beach itself is beautiful: fine sand and crystal-clear waters, with waves breaking both left and right and a low-to-medium swell, making surfing for beginners truly easy and enjoyable.

El Moro also has Drop Beach, located in Corralejo, and offers plenty of parking spaces for visitors arriving by car.

Playa Punta Blanca

We continue recommending places to surf in Fuerteventura for beginners, and this time we are referring to one of the surf schools on the island: Playa Punta Blanca.

The waves here are ideal for beginners who are starting to become familiar with surfing, as the beach offers different tides and waves of all kinds.

Flag Beach

Although it is the favourite destination for windsurfing enthusiasts, it is also highly recommended for those who are hoping to “catch” their first waves on a surfboard.

One of the things we really like about this beach is that it is very spacious, so stopping for one session or another will not bother anyone and may even help you learn from others.

The westerly winds and northern swell create plenty of opportunities to enjoy yourself, whatever the weather. And for those who do not have their own equipment, there are board and wetsuit rental services available in the area, making it a truly attractive and convenient destination.

To reach Flag Beach, head towards the north-east of the island, near the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park.

From the Lopesan Group Blog, we recommend the top spots on the island for this sport. As you can see, there is no shortage of places to surf in Fuerteventura!

And if we still have not convinced you, we make it even easier by inviting you to stay at our hotels in Fuerteventura, where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest after a long day at sea. We are sure it will be a stay you will remember forever!
