Garcey Beach and the Sunken Ship: the American Star
Garcey Beach has a unique historical remnant stranded on its shores: the American Star, a ship that was wrecked more than 20 years ago and whose remains are still almost intact.
In its time, the American Star was one of the most luxurious ships in the world. It required a major investment and was inaugurated in 1939 by the First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt.
On 15 January 1994, the American Star, which was being towed, suffered a serious incident due to a storm that hit the Canary Islands, with waves of more than 8 metres high, strong winds and rain. The strong winds separated both vessels, preventing them from continuing.
Its crew was rescued that same night, and the American Star was left adrift until it ran aground on the coast of Fuerteventura, in the waters of Garcey.
Many locals and tourists are surprised when they see the old, rusty “monument” appearing off the coast of this unspoilt beach. The most surprising thing is that, after so many years, some of the ship’s remains are still almost intact.
How to Get to Garcey Beach in Fuerteventura
Together with Cofete Beach, Garcey in Fuerteventura is one of those destinations that is not very frequented by tourists, so if you are looking for a quieter place to visit during your holidays, you should not miss this beach.
To reach Garcey Beach in Fuerteventura, you must take the FV-605 road, which connects La Pared and Costa Calma. After driving a few kilometres, you will find a turn-off towards Ajuy, which you should ignore unless you want to make a short stop to visit the unusual Ajuy Caves.
If you continue, about 4 kilometres south, you will reach the municipality of Pájara, where you will see a sign indicating the La Solapa – Garcey route. Take the next turn to the right, along a completely dirt road, and after about 5 kilometres you will find parking areas where you can leave your vehicle and visit Garcey Beach in Fuerteventura.
If you do not have a car, no problem! You can reach Garcey by taking bus lines 01, 04 and 05. You will have to get off at Calle Garcey to enjoy a day in this charming place.
Surfing in Garcey, Fuerteventura
Most beaches on the west coast of Fuerteventura have strong waves, so you should be careful when swimming, but they are also ideal for surfing. For this reason, several surfing events and championships are held every year at Garcey Beach in Fuerteventura.
Some of the best-known events in the area are the Garcey Bodyboard and the Surf Championship. Both bring together more than 200 high-level athletes, which is why they hold an important place in the calendar of surfers from the Canary Islands.

Visit the Municipality of Pájara
