Things to do in Maspalomas

TABLE OF CONTENTS

San Bartolomé de Tirajana is characterised by being the largest tourist municipality in Gran Canaria. This town, located in the south of the island, is guaranteed good weather all year round and boasts dream beaches, unique sunsets and a wide range of accommodations, entertainment and leisure activities.

One of the questions many tourists ask themselves on arrival is what to do in Maspalomas, one of the most important centres of this municipality. Here are some recommendations to help you enjoy all its natural attractions and endless possibilities.

A walk through the Maspalomas Dunes

Among the places to visit in Maspalomas, you will find an unusual place: the famous Maspalomas Dunes. Just a few steps away from the Charca, an outstanding resting place for numerous species of migratory birds, these fields of dunes begin, which change shape due to the force of the wind. This Nature Reserve stretches from the Maspalomas Lighthouse to the popular Playa del Inglés. Undoubtedly, a true wonder of nature that is well worth visiting and observing.

You can also make the most of the experiences and adventures on offer here, as you will have to walk or take a camel trek if you want to get there.

This space, protected since 1994, is a group of dunes that were created hundreds of years ago and is home to a unique habitat, where different endemic species coexist, such as the Gran Canaria lizard. The Maspalomas Dunes are one of the must-visits on a trip to the island.

Going to Playa del Inglés

This is one of the most important tourist developments in San Bartolomé de Tirajana and is located on the eastern side of the Maspalomas Dunes. Playa del Inglés was built in 1962 and is home to a large number of hotels, flats, shopping centres and leisure facilities. Nowadays, the residential population coexists with the tourist population.

The beach, almost 3 kilometres long, is one of the most famous in Europe. There is no shortage of reasons for this, because the water temperature is very pleasant (18 to 22 ºC on average). Walking along its golden sand or taking a swim while contemplating the marvellous views are activities to enjoy either in the company of friends, family or your partner.

It is also one of the municipalities where you can enjoy the sun practically every day of the year and practice water sports, such as surfing or bodyboarding.

Watching the sunset at the Maspalomas Lighthouse

Without a doubt, the sunset at the Maspalomas Lighthouse is the candidate for the most hearts on Instagram. Many photos and images have gone viral on social networks, because the orange and yellowish tones of the sunset with the lighthouse in the background are spectacular. In itself, this place is magical and full of magnetism; moreover, its orientation is perfect for watching the sun go down.

However, you have to be patient to capture a good snapshot, because the sunset has no fixed timetable. El Faro de Maspalomas is a quiet, modern place and has El Faro Boulevard on the beachfront, with a large number of exclusive shops and restaurants to contemplate one of the best moments of the day. Although enjoying the sunset from the sand is, in itself, a real luxury, we recommend that you make your reservation at the Blue Marlin Ibiza Sky Lounge Gran Canaria, on the roof of the Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel, and live an experience you will never forget.

Water activities in Maspalomas

This tourist destination not only invites you to relax, have a good swim and sunbathe, but it is also ideal for practising a large number of water activities in Maspalomas. If you like this type of sport, you are in luck if you want to go for a ride on a sail boat. You can also opt for a cruise on a catamaran, with food and drink, and even go whale-watching in the calm waters.

You can also drive a jet ski, sail the sea and enjoy a unique experience in complete freedom. If you are a diving enthusiast, you can dive in open water, in an environment that offers all the possibilities for discovering the fascinating marine life. Finally, you can’t miss the chance to go parasailing, an aquatic activity that will fill you with excitement and put your adrenaline to the test.

Enjoying the leisure centres

Among the things to do in Maspalomas, you can’t rule out two places that are emblematic and full of history. The Ferris wheel at Holiday World Maspalomas has become a symbol that attracts attention, especially at night. Its vibrant and eye-catching lights are an advertising landmark that invites you to visit Gran Canaria’s most emblematic entertainment centre.

Just a few years ago, these facilities underwent a spectacular refurbishment to house 11,000 m2, including a small amusement park, a street food market, karaoke, sports bar, bowling alley, escape rooms and a modern gymnasium.

Finally, we must highlight the Parque del Sur, a unique enclave for strolling, resting, playing sports or having a snack. This urban enclave is quite large and has green spaces to enjoy the grass; it also includes several picnic tables, a children’s area, a beautiful lake, a climbing wall, a bicycle path and a stage with bleachers for events. There is also a cafeteria where you can sit and relax.

In short, we are sure that with these suggestions you now have a clearer idea of what to do in Maspalomas. Furthermore, in this town you have an infinite number of accommodation options. Our Lopesan hotels in Playa del Inglés are a good option thanks to their wide range of services.  If you prefer to stay in one of the liveliest urban centres of Gran Canaria, Maspalomas is the place for you. And if you’re thinking of staying in Meloneras, you’ll marvel at what this fabulous southern resort has to offer.
