Corralejo dunes in Fuerteventura, a spectacular natural park

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Facing the turquoise waters of northern Fuerteventura, the Corralejo dunes shape a landscape that feels more desert than island. Stretching for kilometres, the white sands are swept by a constant breeze, with views across to Lobos Islet and Lanzarote. In this protected setting, untouched beaches sit alongside volcanic terrain.

This natural park impresses with its contrasts and sheer sense of space. In this guide you’ll find what to see, how to get there and what to bear in mind when exploring one of the island’s most remarkable places: Corralejo Natural Park.

What is Corralejo Natural Park

Corralejo Natural Park lies in the north of Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands. Declared a protected area in 1982, it’s famed for fine white dunes that roll for several kilometres beside the sea. Just inland rises the island’s volcanic core, creating a striking geological contrast.

Here a desert-like landscape meets clear, shallow waters, forming a unique ecosystem where different species of flora and fauna thrive. It’s one of the island’s most visited areas thanks to its natural beauty and environmental importance.

How to get there and access rules

You can reach the park by car via the FV-1 road from Corralejo. Parking is limited, especially in high season. Entry is free, but rules are in place to protect the environment. To prevent dune erosion, walking on the dunes and driving off authorised tracks are prohibited. Leaving litter or lighting fires is not allowed.

What to do in Corralejo Natural Park

The simplest pleasure is to wander the dunes and nearby beaches, a gentle way to soak up nature. You can also follow marked paths, look for birdlife or capture the scenery with your camera. A popular route is the climb up Montaña Roja, an extinct volcano offering panoramic views over the park and the sea.

Thanks to the ever-present wind, kitesurfing and windsurfing are big draws. The park is also ideal for spotting native plants adapted to sandy, arid terrain, such as sea lavender and cardón cactus, and for observing migratory birds and endemic lizards.

Each year the Fuerteventura International Half Marathon crosses the dunes, attracting runners and spectators. Whatever your interest, there’s plenty here for a day in the open air.

Viewpoints and panoramic views

One of the best ways to appreciate the park’s scale is from elevated spots. Although there are no official viewpoints, several places offer sweeping panoramas.

If you’re after a lookout over the dunes, don’t miss the ascent of Montaña Roja at the southern edge of the park. On clear days, the summit reveals Lobos Islet, Lanzarote and much of northern Fuerteventura.

Along the FV-1, which cuts through the park, there are small lay-bys where you can stop briefly to take photos; always with care and without leaving designated areas.

These vantage points help you grasp the park’s breadth and variety, perfect for quiet contemplation or landscape photography.

Sun and beaches

The park has beaches blessed with sunshine year-round. With fine sand and clear waters, they’re ideal for swimming, sunbathing or simply unwinding. Some stretches are peaceful—great if you’re seeking calm—while others can be livelier in peak season. Many areas also suit watersports. The nearby volcanic terrain adds dark rock formations along parts of the shore, a striking counterpoint to the pale sands.

It’s worth distinguishing between the northern beaches, such as Grandes Playas, which are wider and more frequented, and the smaller, quieter coves to the south: good options if you prefer fewer people.

Adding colour each spring, the International Kite Festival in Corralejo brings a festive touch to this natural setting.

Beaches worth visiting

Playa del Burro beach (also known as Alzada)

If you want a quiet beach with few tourists and easy access, Playa del Burro (also known as Alzada)is a strong choice. Roughly 300 metres long, it’s often breezy but rarely uncomfortably so. Set near Corralejo, it’s easy to reach by public transport or car. Gentle surf makes it ideal for families or friends. Services are minimal, so bring water, food and everything you need for a relaxed day.

Playa del Moro beach

Playa del Moro is a favourite for surfing. Constant wind and swell make it well suited to the sport. With white sand, turquoise water and a 300-metre shoreline, it’s also lovely for a seaside stroll. From the beach you can see Lobos Islet and, beyond it, Lanzarote—an added visual treat. Facilities are basic but sufficient for a straightforward beach day.

Playa El Bajo Negro beach

Playa El Bajo Negro is among the most comfortable, family-friendly options near the dunes. About 500 metres long with very gentle waves, it offers a calm setting for a day with children. A key advantage is the range of amenities: children’s play areas, restaurants and the essentials for an easy, enjoyable visit.

Playa El Viejo beach

Playa El Viejo is another good pick for families, with sheltered areas and lifeguards for extra peace of mind. Fine sand and clear water create a welcoming spot for swimming and photos alike. With enough facilities for a carefree day, it’s a convenient place to enjoy the sun and sea.

Playa del Médano beach

Playa del Médano is a reference point for windsurf and kitesurf enthusiasts. The constant wind attracts athletes year-round, and sails and kites are a familiar sight offshore. Boat trips for whale and dolphin watching also depart from the surrounding area.

Excursion to Lobos Islet

A visit to Lobos Islet is a must while you’re in Corralejo. Its name recalls the monk seals and sea lions that once lived here. Just two kilometres from Corralejo, it covers six square kilometres and has 14 kilometres of coastline, all protected to safeguard wildlife.

Access requires a permit from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and you can only arrive by boat. Exploring the islet reveals an unspoilt natural world.

What to see on Lobos Islet

Touring the islet is unforgettable. Its volcanic landscape offers walking routes that lead to superb viewpoints.

The ascent of the La Caldera volcanic cone is one of the most recommended walks. From the summit the views of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are breathtaking.

A swim is a must, too. La Concha beach, near the jetty, is ideal thanks to its crescent shape, which shelters it from currents. Another option is Caleta de Rasca, where there’s also a pleasant restaurant to enjoy local food with sea views.

Practical tips for visiting Corralejo Natural Park

To make the most of your visit and respect the environment, keep these basics in mind:

  • Wear comfortable footwear for walking on sand and rocky areas.
  • Use high-factor sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, especially in summer.
Bring enough water to stay hydrated.
  • Respect signs and protected zones: the dunes are fragile and need care.
  • Do not walk on the dunes.
  • Vehicles are not allowed off authorised routes.
  • Take all litter with you to protect local flora and fauna.
  • Check current access rules and times before you go, especially in high season.
